Exploring Subak: Delegation of the 10th World Water Forum to Visit Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

The 10th World Water Forum is scheduled to take place from May 18 to 25, 2024, in Bali. Delegates are scheduled to visits several Tourist Destination Areas (DTAs) such as the Water Museum in Tabanan, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jatiluwih, Lake Batur in Kintamani, and the Cultural Village of Ubud.

I Ketut Purna, the Manager of Jatiluwih Tourist Destination Area (DTAs), stated that the Central Government and the Bali Regional Government have improved transportation infrastructure and beautified the surrounding nature of the Jatiluwih Tourism Village. Coordination with the Subak leaders is also continously being carried out.

As the host country of the 10th World Water Forum, Indonesia aims to make the rice fields located at the foot of Mount Batukaru an example of sustainable water management. The subak system is rooted in the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana that creates harmony between humans, nature, and the divine.

Subak Jatiluwih is a symbol of local wisdom in sustainable water resource management and also a tourist destination offering trekking and hiking trails for visitors.

UNESCO Cultural Heritage

UNESCO designated the Jatiluwih rice terraces as a World Cultural Heritage site since 2012. Former President of the United State, Barack Obama, also visited this area and emphasized the importance of Subak Jatiluwih in global culture.

Moreover, the 10th World Water Forum, attended by delegates from 250 countries, presents a golden opportunity to promote local wisdom ad the natural beauty of Bali while affirming Indonesia's role in global water diplomacy.
